Savo Drezgic Leaves Partizan for the University of Georgia.

Savo Drezgic Leaves Partizan for the University of Georgia.

First Real Madrid and Barcelona saw their young players leave for the US College Championship, and now Partizan has been informed by 18-year-old Savo Drezgic that he will be heading to the University of Georgia next season.

Many experts have long identified and discussed a problem in European basketball. The issue has been publicly stated and explained in detail by those deeply involved in the sport. One of these experts is Paulius Motiejunas, the executive director of the EuroLeague. During his time in Berlin for the Final Four, he expressed his particular anxiety about the future of basketball on the continent. Serbian agent Misko Raznatovic also echoed these concerns.

The change in regulations in the United States College Championship (NCAA) and the newfound ability for student-athletes to make money has only exacerbated this issue. As a result, European teams are losing their young talents to the NCAA.

Real Madrid and Barcelona recently lost a total of three young, super-talented players who decided to leave Europe to continue their careers in the NCAA. Specifically, 18-year-old Russian forward Igor Demin of Real Madrid will compete with Bingham Young University. His teammate in Madrid, Ismaila Diagne from Senegal, will be transferred to Gonzaga, while Barcelona was informed by young Lithuanian Kasparas Jakucionis that he will leave for Illinois.

Partizan’s Turn to Face the Music.

Now, it’s Partizan’s turn to face the loss of a budding star. The 18-year-old Savo Drezgic, a product of the Belgrade team’s academies, made his debut with the first team in February 2023 during a Cup match. From May of the same year until the end of the season, he participated in scattered matches, including those in the Adriatic League.

However, Drezgic’s journey will now continue on the other side of the Atlantic at the University of Georgia. He had offers and scholarships from top US college programs like Stanford and Arizona, but he ultimately chose Georgia. As a freshman in the 2024-25 season, he will aim to prove his worth in a new country and on a new continent.
