Demetre Rivers Signs with Zalgiris Kaunas for the Upcoming Season.

In Lithuania, the arrival of 28-year-old, 203-centimeter-tall Demetre Rivers to Zalgiris Kaunas has sparked anticipation. Rivers, accompanied by his partner and a dog, landed at Vilnius Airport on Friday, April 19, 2024, afternoon before swiftly making his way to Kaunas. He is scheduled for medical examinations and immediate integration into Zalgiris’ team training as soon as possible.

Upon landing in Lithuania, Rivers shared his excitement with “Žalgiris TV,” expressing surprise and delight at the unexpected opportunity to join the renowned Zalgiris team. Having commenced the current season with Italy’s club Gibova, Rivers had already acquainted himself with what awaits him in Kaunas, having had discussions with the team’s management during the season.

A seasoned player entering his sixth professional season, Rivers boasts experience from Estonia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey, and Italy. With an average of 10.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in the Italian basketball league this season, Rivers also demonstrated his sharpshooting prowess with a 41.3% three-point accuracy, ranking 15th in the league.

Rivers, proficient in both offensive and defensive roles, emphasizes his adaptability and work ethic on the court. He sees himself as a versatile defender capable of guarding multiple positions and takes pride in his ability to score from various spots on the floor, enhancing team gameplay.

Excited about the prospect of playing alongside EuroLeague-caliber teammates for the first time in his career, Rivers acknowledges the significance of this opportunity. Wearing jersey number 23 for Zalgiris, Rivers looks forward to contributing his skills and dedication to the team’s success. He stated,

“The last 24 hours have been really crazy. I really didn’t expect to change teams at such a late stage of the season. The call from Zalgiris was a huge surprise for me,” the American said. “But, of course, I was immediately very happy. And now I am very happy. It is known that the Zalgiris organization is known, so it will be fun to be part of it. I’m very grateful for this opportunity, but I haven’t had time to think about it properly yet. It all happened so fast.” He also said,

“I had the opportunity to get to know the coach better. He explained to me what it means to be part of the green and white team. The expectations of the team, the expectations of me. They told me what kind of situation I would be in,” the new Zalgiris native testified. “I think I can offer flexibility. I’m a hard worker on the field. I’m a versatile player on defense. I can cover against players at a lot of different positions. Offensively, I think my biggest strength is being able to hit shots from different positions. So I can add that to the team game. I want to give it my all. We’ll see how it goes,”

D. Rivers said of his strengths on the court, “This is an incredible opportunity. I’ve seen Zalgiris games before. During my career, I have seen Euroleague games. I think every professional basketball player wants to play at this level. With the players of the Euroleague team. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Euroleague game or not. All players have that desire. An opportunity like this, at such a time in my career, when I didn’t expect it, is really excellent and pleasant.”
